Kakhovka Dam Catastroph

The explosion at the Kakhovka Dam has caused extensive and devastating flooding, impacting 80 towns and villages in the Kherson Region. Approximately 40,000 individuals are currently stranded in their homes in this area, urgently requiring evacuation and assistance. In certain locations, the water has risen over 20 feet within the first two days, though it has since receded to 10 feet.

Several villages have been completely submerged, and the most critical situation persists in 14 towns, including parts of Kherson, Oleshki, and Hola Prystan. This dire circumstance poses a grave threat to the lives and well-being of tens of thousands of people.

The floodwaters are contaminated with diesel fuel, pesticides, sewage, and hazardous bacteria from cemeteries and animal carcasses. Apart from the immediate dangers of high water levels, lack of clean drinking water, and food shortages, there is also a heightened risk of a cholera pandemic.

The presence of Russian troops and their relentless shelling of the flooded areas further exacerbate the urgency and complexity of the evacuation efforts. The affected population finds themselves trapped in an extremely challenging predicament.

Given these circumstances, it is crucial to evacuate people from the affected region promptly, while also providing them with clean water, food, and medicine, and effectively draining the contaminated floodwaters.

TCI’s dedicated team of staff and volunteers is already on-site, actively assisting in addressing this urgent need. We are immensely grateful to our donors who have already contributed to this cause, enabling us to purchase essential supplies such as shovels, buckets, rubber boots, clean water, food, and several pumps.

However, the scope of the need surpasses our initial expectations, and we wholeheartedly appreciate any additional support from those who are able to contribute. You can make a donation online by clicking HERE.
